Bukalapak is currently working remotely due to COVID-19. So, this role doesn’t require you to move at the time being.
As a Data Engineering Manager, your primary role is in being a servant leader that coaches and helps our engineering talents grow in skill, experience, and productivity, and help guide them towards career paths that align with their passion and life goals. We believe finding a great match between what the talent is passionate about and the opportunity that the company provides would result in incredible productivity multipliers for both the talent and the company, so you also need to be an attentive individual that cares a lot about the aspirations and growth of the engineers that you manage.
One particular note about this role, unlike traditional Engineering Manager/Development Manager roles elsewhere in Indonesia, you would not be expected to lead an engineering team in deciding and executing their regular development tasks. Engineering at Bukalapak is a very decentralized process that empowers our engineers and their respective squads to self-organize and make their own decisions about task executions. Rather, you will focus on being a servant leader that can support and assist the engineers in their productivity and career path.
Within this role, you will work together with other Managers in developing and implementing the career plans, guidelines, and engineering standards at Bukalapak. You will also be actively involved in engineering recruitment, ensuring that we uphold our strict standards in hiring so that talents with the right culture and passion join our family and contribute in a productive manner. Naturally, you need to build a strong prior experience in being a Data Engineer or Engineering Coach to be able to guide other engineers in their career path with Bukalapak.
- Coach and manage the engineering talents at Bukalapak
- Be a positive driving force behind your team in improving its engineering productivity and focusing their engineering talents in maximizing their impact to the Tribe
- Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with your engineers in order to capture their needs, passion, aspirations, and possible issues, and took active steps to assist them in achieving their best possible productivity
- Work with Squad Leads (e.g. Product Managers and Software Architects) to sense the health and rhythm of the Squad, and take proactive steps to capture and resolve issues impacting the squad's productivity as early as possible
- Provide advice related to career growth and planning for individual engineers in Bukalapak, including how the engineers can grow into the next level according to the pace that they feel comfortable with
What you will do specifically as the Data Engineering Manager:
- Provide hands-on technical leadership in data engineering design and implementations including data capturing, data ingestion, data-modelling, data storage, high-throughput data processing, data pipelines, and data monitoring at scale
- Develop and follow data engineering best practices with considerations for high data availability, computational efficiency, cost, and quality
- Build and maintain environments (in cloud platforms), processes, functionalities, and tools to improve all stages of data solution development, e.g., proof of concepts, prototypes, and production
- Develop frameworks (in cloud platforms) for transitioning analytics solutions at different maturity levels between data science and operational teams
- Automate manual processes into repeatable capabilities
- Create and maintain containers to deploy analytics applications in cloud-based platforms
- Evaluate and make recommendations on new technologies, tools, and practices. Provide guidance to keep the team up-to-date with them.
- Mentor junior engineers in the data engineering team
Requirements
What you need to have (i.e., Minimum Qualifications)
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science or related fields, or equivalent professional experience in software development
- Humble culture, zero egos, and excellent collaborative spirit. We are all here to learn together and grow together as a team
- High degree of attentiveness and care about the growth of other engineers in your team
- Proven experience in coaching or helping other engineers grow in their skills and productivity
- Proven experience in data engineering, including firm grasp of scalable data pipeline process, design patterns and principles, clean code, pragmatic aspects of programming. Fluent in SQL.
- DevOps experience implementing large scale data stacks using any CI/CD tool and Docker
- Experience building data streaming system
- Expertise in Java, Scala or Python
